When a visitor makes a purchase by using a link from one of our pages here, we will receive a commission - a percentage of the purchase. I thought the best way to make this useful and fun would be to list and recommend books, computers and computer components, electronics, DVDs and so on. If we start with what interests us, or in this case, with my writing this, what interests me, it may turn out that others find a similar interest. Perhaps our reviews, recommendations and comments will be of help to others as well, in terms of buying decisions.

Recently, I became interested in how the brain and mind work and the ways in which we can exercise our brain to improve thinking, Intelligence and memory among other things. Science is beginning to show that the brain is more "elastic" than expected. That means that abilities that might otherwise decline due to brain cell loss over time, can be redirected and the brain can be stimulated to build new cells and thus to continue to increase intellectual and memory growth over time. This book, Memory Fitness has gotten high praise for the effectiveness in improving memory by following various exercises.

City Council Meeting tomorrow

Persons representing the homeless, needy and other marginalized groups in Durham, NC will be appearing before the Durham City Council today, August 4, 2005 at 2:30pm. The hope is to begin a dialogue that will begin to work toward empowering the homeless and needy... empowering the homeless where they live. We also work toward empowerrment where and when decisions are made effecting the homeless, needy, and those living with mental illness, among other groups which are marginalized and by definition such groups are made up of minorities. Minorities are by definition, those persons or groups who have less of a say, less control and less power within a society.

This idea of empowerment will be radically new in the way people think and act. Such groups and agencies that serve the needy (or any of the groups mentioned above or that could be mentioned) are being asked to include those persons who will be served by a particular agency, a program, a service. This message must be taken from City Hall onward to the county and state level. The nature of this change is to make coalitions, councils, agencies and so forth, look at what needs to be changed to make program planning and project funding clear and understandable to all those citizens who will be effected. I recognize that coalitions and councils that serve various groups often do not involve their target population in the process.

The ideas, beliefs and attitudes are such that discussions about funding sources, seeking and/or allocating grant funds are not the place where the homeless, needy and other groups, would understand the process or that the discussion would not be of interest to the folks who will benefit. It is here and elsewhere that a radical change is needed. This is the message that I myself, and others, would like to see brought out into the community at the city, county, state level.
Thank you,
Bruce Whealton

The Homeless cannot have books?

One of the staff members, at Urban Ministries was saying, "Don't let anyone see you with books." He was trying to help me out before I got caught with a book! What do they do at the shelter to those caught with a book on the property? In a certain way, this was rather amusing. Who would have thought that one would have to hide the fact that he or she had books, or to specifically hide any books they might be carrying.
This was the day in which the books were to be removed from the premeses. Otherwise, one might suppose that all the books would be thown into the trash along with the owner of the books, perhaps. Pack up your clothes if you want and bring them right into the shelter. There will be no problems with such items stuffed within backpacks, dufflebags or other similar bags.
Just don't be foolish and bring any books into the shelter or be found with any books.

Story by Poindexter

Missing People

Living as a homeless person in the one shelter in Durham it's easy to loose someone. I had thought the shelter was a sanctuary, a word I would associate with a shelter. Here we were people in distress and needing support and hope and we're being given anything but support, hope or respect. It seems to not even occur to the staff at the shelter that we might have a friend or a new acquaintance that we'd like to keep in touch with. I recall asking about B to D., who I will give the benefit of the doubt being that it just never occurred to him. I had asked how can I help her because I knew that the reasons for her being banned from the shelter were a mistake a false accusation - actually it was pure and simple discrimination. When I asked where she might go as partially a rhetorical question, he said, maybe Raleigh, the nearby city. It was as if my interest in talking to this person could not or should not really be of interest to anyone.
Naturally one asks what did she do? There must have been a reason she was banned from the shelter, one might say. B spoke with a somewhat Indian accent, not Native American but as one who is from India. Sometimes I had to ask her to repeat things. I also heard from her that some injury made clear communication a problem. This should be considered when one looks at why she was banned from the shelter. She was accused of communicating a threat. The problem was that I was there and I understood what she said. This so called threat was made to one much larger than she. A staff member said she felt threatened. That was all it took. One staff member stated this and nothing I tried to say to clear things up was of any interest to anyone there. I found myself in shock as I tried to explain that nothing of the kind was said by B.
Why would they refuse to listen to me? I'm trying not to see things in a us versus them perspective. Where we are the residents of the shelter and they are the staff. I recently asked, "why do they hate us?"
I hope B is well and that I do run into her again. She's not the only person that I lost since I have been staying there. Desperately, I try to make some form of permanent contact with those who might leave, move on, or be kicked out.
Bruce

Loosing everything - hopeless

Please visit our sponsors/affiliates/associates. The day started out unusually warm but soon cooled off. It was now close to 6pm and the temperature sure had dropped since this morning. I was still wearing the shorts and t-shirt I put on this morning. I was anxious to get home and put on some warmer clothing.
Actually, I knew that where I lived was not home. The neighborhood was too dangerous and relations with the landlord had gotten quite bad lately. I was trying to do what I thought was right. I should have gotten out of there by now.
These thoughts were going through my mind as I walked up the steps into the house. That’s when shock hit me. I stood there looking at the nearly empty room, while the landlord spoke of an intruder. His words seemed to fade away as did everything else. A few books lay her and there… All my clothing was gone. Hundreds and hundreds of books were gone… The computer was gone! along with the 500+ CDs and DVDs which had books, software, photographs, web sites, music, videos. Irreplaceable items of personal value, including years of my writing, were gone!
A part of me remained to tally up the losses. I had lost my livelihood! I had a home-based business which required internet access, software and a computer. I had lost a place to call home.
I was walking away, thinking about what had been lost, as it spun through my mind, without any hope of relief and without any way to make sense of things. Certain items make up a history of a person or family, for example, photographs and photo-albums, filled with long since deceased persons. My own photographs I had taken over the years were gone along with the negatives. Photography has been a hobby of mine for at least 15 years. I have also been a writer. Years of my writing were gone. I wanted to ask my parents what things would be like if their entire house was robbed similarly, with photographs handed down through the years, memories, things we collect, or Mom collects.
I guess we all, my family included, have lost a number of things, in the past few years. Their misfortune was not as extreme but still it was a serious loss. If I had been asked if I backed up my data that was on the computer, I could proudly say, “yes.” Unfortunately, the backup data, the CDs, and DVDs were gone. Is that what we are, memories that can so easily be lost, stolen or erased? My writing would have served as proof that I had a history of being a writer or poet. My web sites would attest to the talents I gained in web design. The photographs, new and old, would have preserved some evidence of a life lived. These things, sadly, would have been the objective evidence of a certain reality, a reality now gone!

Fear and Insecurity

Please visit our sponsors/affiliates/associates. Sundays the bus does not run as late as other days. This is a fact that did not occur to me, as I didn't think about the idea that one it was Sunday and two that the last bus would not come after 6:30pm if that late. I had set out to catch the bus at the 7:30 pm time, and would be out there by 7:20 to be safe in terms of time. It then hit me that I had missed the last bus for the day.

I started thinking about walking all the way back, 10 miles or more. I'd be hoping that I'd get back before it started raining and storming. Then I got $2 from someone, I'm not sure why I got this gift but it was helpful to have. Fearing being caught in the rain, I just decided to wait till the morning and catch the bus back toward downtown.

The next day, no one was really concerned about me. Instead, I found out later that the person on duty at the homeless shelter where I was staying was not supposed to LET ME IN! Now, I must meet with someone. Will they have comfort to offer for someone caught, stranded out in the middle of nowhere? It seems they'd prefer to set consequences and punish for breaking a rule. Before saluting any rules that might seem logical and necessary, I ask that one consider the feelings of a person caught out all night, unable to sleep at all. How many times staff has seen me crying and offered no comfort or even a pretense of concern! I can remember one single time where I had someone offer me concern and some comforting words that everything will be ok. I contrast that with many many times when it was just the opposite. To be honest, I don't even like going there. When I show concern for someone, staff members or others there, I get told basically to "go away" or specifically, "go on!" "go on!" It's those times when I want to scream, not literally but it was how I felt. Rudeness? Absolutely! Come there and find it. Find abuse and humiliation. You'd think our situation as it is would be enough to lower our self-esteem and that a person who offered to volunteer would have compassion or be inclined to be caring. Again, I understand rules but one can enforce rules and still be there for the other person who is scared, abandoned, needing comfort. Why else choose to work at a shelter or soup kitchen?
Bruce Whealton

Thanks for joining - to those new members

Please visit our sponsors/affiliates/associates. I am glad to have postings from persons other than myself. This is what is needed to make this project work. We need to have non-profits and churches and so on to back us and help us with adding to membership in this community. Eventually we will create a print version of the Street Newspaper. Many communities get their local newspaper to do this for them for free.

If many of the invitations that I send out do result in a membership of 20+ members and that will be a staff that can rival other large street newspapers in Callifornia; that is what I've heard larger Street Newspapers reside. I was reading thisat the North American Street Newspaper Association web site, I believe that is where I read it. What can be done to encourage persons to donate books for the needy and homeless? I see the donations being made at the library and think that we should be able to get such donations also. Any suggestions are welcome.
Bruce

Taking Positive to Actions

Too often we expend precious time and resources getting our meesage out about the problems effecting homeless people and those living in poverty without focusing on viable solutions of resolve. There are plenty of informative mediums out there who provide mounds of information, William Tinker is an excellent example of one who lives on the front line, keeping us informed of the global issues effecting the homeless. However, in lieu of the many crisis facing the world today I'm afraid that if we don't offer positive solutions our messages will get lost in the sauce. We must face the painful reality that there are some homeless folks who have chosen, for whatever reason or the circumstance, to permanently make the streets their place of residency.

What can we do to better inform the public of the homeless culture and the underlying causes that make the chronically homeless feel it's better to live on the streets than to seek shelter or a permanent living environment? I believe this can best be accomplished by those who have actually lived the life of homelessness. Although the government is screwed up at this time Americans in general are very compassionate and generous people and are willing to invest in positive activities to help those who are disadvantaged. But everyone expects a good return on their investment. What can we do to change the face of traditional service delivery systems that have basically failed.

thanks from me too

Please visit our sponsors/affiliates/associates. The group having the open-mike was a spiritual group focussing on spiritual issues. I was able to talk about loosing everything and finding meaning by creating a street newspaper at StreetExposure.blogspot.com I even got a few donations there and then. We got new members to the Street Newspaper publication as well. In a recent posting by a new member that joined from that group, I was able to strongly relate to the reality that the homeless are indeed in need of safety, assurance and security. I've been the victim of crime so many times since I have been living homeless or nearly homeless, that is living in poverty. Persons need to understand that being left outside, without admittance to a shelter is a reality. No matter how much one tries to play their game, eventually it will be you that is out and not allowed admittance. Those who love us must cope with reality that there are real dangers we face and real vulnerability. I'm sure our loved ones feel powerless in such situations. And who wants to call a distance, physically distant, family member and beg for assistance in getting into a safe place, like a hotel/motel room? It's not our choice that we can't get into the shelter. Would persons be surprised that without paying a fee a person can actually be kept out of a shelter that should serve to be there for the penniless person. In our city moreover, our shelter is located in an area that one should not be in after dark. No one has to convince me of that.
Sometimes we just need an all powerful and all merciful, mother figure in God, to hold us and comfort and protect us. If one is in a safe place we could relax and focus on that source of imagery to help us.
So much more can be said about the very real dangers faced by the homeless. That is what we often have to fear most, our neighbors in these neighborhoods or areas, not some other boggie man elsewhere. Our fear and perception of danger is real and it impedes efforts to be the best we can be in reaching for our goals, any goals, to improve our situation. Fear and Danger both are real for us.
-B

Thanks for the Invitation

Thank you to Poindexter for the invitation to join the discussion about homelessness and poverty. While I'm sure that homelessness looks a little different here in SE Ohio, I'm sure that the need for services and the hopelessness that surrounds such a matter are no different.

Almost four years ago, I was allowed to experience the hopelessness and desperation of being homeless. I had moved to SE Ohio from NW Ohio to help start a church. I had sketchy plans for housing, but at the last minute they fell through. I can tell you this: at no other time in my life have I depended on my God more than that day and those to come. Over the following year, I began to understand a different world that many people have to live in. One without security and assurance. Those words, security and assurance, may not seem all that weighty, but until you live in that place, there is no way that anyone can relate.

My heart has come to feel so burdened for the lonely, hopeless and hurting. Everything in my spirit wants to help and comfort people who are experiencing these things, but my personality and fear of the unknown hinder that help and comfort.

I've learned over the past four years that the only way things are going to change is if each individual makes the choice to do something. It doesn't have to be a BIG something. Does your neighbor need a few canned goods or fresh milk for the baby? Do you have some extra clothes that you could "lend" to someone in need? Do you have a lot of items you do not need or use? Have a yard sale and sell everything for nothing. These acts do not change things for a huge mass of people, but perhaps your generosity will infect another person. At least you have shown the love of the Father in your small act.

Above all else, never forget to love someone. Even if it is a smile and a "hello."

Thank you again for the invitation.

Defeating Homelessness and Hunger

Please visit our sponsors/affiliates/associates. And visit Web service package. Help support us.

It was not long ago that I was sitting in church, at the Catholic Church - Immaculate Conception Catholic Church - when I heard an announcement toward the end of Mass from the Director of Urban Ministries. The topic was to support an effort to address hunger. We were being encouraged to write to our Senator from North Carolina. I mean no disrespect for the speaker. Yet, my impression was such as hearing a dispassionate speech. If the idea itself didn't seem good, I doubt anyone would be movited to do something in response. I can't quite remember the details of what was said but I do remember thinking how much differently I would present the topic, or any issue to help the homeles, needy and those living in poverty.

I'm reminded of a speach I gave at a fundraiser. I started by stating that my words would be different, my appeal, my perception and knowledge of this issue. The point I was making was that this isn't fun or exciting work we do to change problems of poverty, homelessness and related conditions. The experience is one of great seriousness. The stories and the condition of being homeless and poor are about pain, hopelessness, and the experience of going without food.

It's sad. It hurts and it's hard. Just getting our of bed and finding some way to deal with life, weighs heavily upon a person. I can give a perspective of being so sad and hurting that my stomach is in knots, churning. I find it hard to eat and being sick doesn't help one to be able to go out and make it on their own... We may be expected to do so... to be invincible and without or immune to hurt and fatigue.

Things should be diferent and they can be if changes happen but not until. Try it to see for oneself.
Bruce

The abuses of power

The way she acts, she'd try the patiece of Saint Peter," said L in referring to a staff member at the local Urban Ministries, the shelter for the homeless who live in Durham, NC.

Later, I'll discuss a friend who came to the shelter as a victim of Domestic Violence. Seeking shelter she came, and safety but she was put out at night.

In another recent conversation, M, was saying, "I am so livid, I cannot even write anything."
Another person answered, "But that is the only way you will get anything done. It must be in writing."

This writer had the idea of walk-outs with demands for the respect we deserve as human beings. When you examine the make-up of the board, for the shelter, you see a seperation between us and them. The same situation exists and inspires M, and L to feel such anger and frustration. This attitude and these sentiments can be heard by merely listening as one does when trust has been earned. You'd further hear a hopeless statement such as, "what makes you think they care?" This would be followed by further hopelessness that nothing can be done, there is no use trying.

What is done, though? What human rights are violated? Let's start with the right to privacy. That right we must sign away when we go through orientation when first coming to the Urban Ministries Shelter. Residents agree that all information can be shared among various service providers in he community. In other words, anywhere one goes for any services, from Urban Ministries, to Social Services, and so on, will result in a paper trail that anyone can follow. This information is public and thus available for access, use and abuse for anyone interested. In the times following the US PATRIOT act, this is a reasonable concern.

Another human right violation involves the punishment that is given out by the word of just one staff member. This staff member need only say something happened. The idea of an appeal, trial or review of the matter is not an option. It was probably hard for D. Bradford to understand that someone might care about what happened to someone who was banned from the shelter. That was a classic example of someone hearing one thing and assuming something that was far from accurate. This writer was present when the supposed threat was made and can verify that no threat at all was in any way communicated. Is it strange that my friend, B. S., was thus missing and that I had no way of knowing where she is? She is that person who was mentioned previously as a victim of Domestic Violence and she was seeking safety.
Fortunately, I found her later or ran into her. However, it just was by chance.

It's all about power. They have it and the residents don't.

FS: 80000 Web/Flash Templates, Scripts, Graphics

Read on to learn how this can help your company and your creative and professional needs.
Everything for an online web service, web site, web page.
This this will help me raise desperately needed funds, for realizing a
a new career opportunity in web services and more
- a career change/new career direction ** and ** to help
the needy locally.

We're asking $9.99 for all of this and payment can be made
via paypal to writerandpublisher@inbox.com
When you do this, you get instant download!
Or send money to
Bruce Whealton
410 Liberty St.
Durham, NC 27702
919-743-2490 Paypal is instant.

A collection of templates, clip art, Flash designs, e-books and more!!
And so cheap. Our business is Triangle Web Hosting and Web Design. Our reseller account is behind quite a bit and I thought a payment arrangement with the company would work but they want over $100 today, now, to allow us to use the accounts. Even $20 would get me closer to being there. If I could get some web hosting accounts that would help more. I have to charge something more on my accounts since the price of web hosting has gone up and I cannot get it with unlimited space and unlimited bandwidth outside of Ebay.com Until I get that paid off, I can't offer the donated space. Now with an Ebay account, I could find a different seller that would have unlimited space, thus eliminating this need. That is why I asked for family and friends to help me get an ebay account. I can also sell products off Ebay.com to raise funds. I can easily make $100 just by taking a few moments to post content on ebay. I need that account though. A pre-paid MasterCard or Visa would cost about $60 or so, since I think the lowest ammount you can pay to get started is $50 and $9.95 is the fee. I'd have to find out for sure on that.

I also have no place to go tonight to sleep... no way to get a change of clothing and no way to get medications I need. They kicked me off the board a while back and I've only seen more abuses since then, and not just to me. Why choose such a job, as to work at a shelter and then have such detachment and lack of compassion. If I chose to work there, I'd be doing so out of a desire to want to help others, to benefit my neighbor, not to use their vulnerability against them. As residents we are vulnerable. They will claim over and over that I said something, like some cuss word - I never cuss, swear, or otherwise use profanity, never! It's never about right and wrong but about power and control. They have it and we don't. So, through at least Sunday PM, I cannot go in there to get anything of mine - books, clean clothing or meds. A safe placeto stay would be needed greatly. The other day I was walking and got threatened that if I walk that street again, something would happen. I know it's true, having been robbed not that long ago. Advice, don't walk after dark, right, that is adviseable correct? Budget Inn on Holloway has rooms at $25 or less.
With regard to the treatment of people at the shelter, I'm reminded of this quote which has appeared in slightly different forms. First let me quote what I read at the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC. There is a large torch always lit and it says "Never Again" as a promise. Never Again.

They came for the Communists, and I didn't object -
For I wasn't a Communist;
They came for the Socialists, and I didn't object -
For I wasn't a Socialist;
They came for the labor leaders, and I didn't object -
For I wasn't a labor leader;
They came for the Jews, and I didn't object -
For I wasn't a Jew;
Then they came for me - And there was no one left to object.
- Martin Niemoller, German Protestant Pastor, 1892-1984...

From the site at: http://www.holocaust-history.org/questions/niemoller.shtml

So, this situation of mine is quite sad and leaves me feeling humiliated. Yes, I admit to crying... wanting a mommy to hold me just like being a little boy.
Thanks,
Bruce

Books forsale with Amazon.com

One way to help out the homeless and needy is to buy books that we sell through Amazon.com
When you get to amazon.com, search for Durham Writers among the Marketplace listings or zShops, or search by email: writerandpublisher@inbox.com
Offering paperback and hardcover books at prices that can't be beat.

Ask about web hosting with Triangle Web Hosting and Web Design, prices for economy packages are under $5.00 per month.

We also offer web design services. This is a
great time to get great bargains, with hardcover books $1 and paperbacks 50 cents. It would be nice to get books for the homeless and needy - persons who often cannot afford books. So, consider books that you might donate to the homeless and needy. Right across the street is Urban Ministries. Just drop off any books during the sale, after the sale or whenever in the future. Give them to the attention of Bruce, Karen, or Mark. We'll get them in storage later.

email me at writerandpublisher@inbox.com if you want to join this publication. You don't have to be homeless or have been homeless. It's just a good way to make a difference and inform the public, advocate for the rights of the homeless and those living in shelters, or the needy (this could include persons with mental illness, women, gays, lesbians, socialist party members, the disabled and others). :-)
Thanks,
Bruce

Introductions

My dream for this is to see it grow into a large publication that will meet the needs of the homeless and those living in poverty. I bring my experience and skills as a writer and web designer. I personally face barriers to resuming the web hosting and web design and web hosting having lost everything. You can read more details about this at: http://loosingeverything.blogspot.com
(my story and my current situation). Street newspapers provide public awareness of issues of poverty and the needy. They also give opportunities for the homeless and those living in poverty to gain education, experience, skills and possible income, all the while giving a voice to those who are otherwise hidden and unnoticed. See the North American Street Newspaper Association at http://nasna.org for more information.
I also hope to turn my skills in writing and web design into a non-profit where I could focus on providing services to agencies, charities, churches and so on, in the community that need skills and free service and free content to better reach their goals. For all of this, I need to start improving my situation in life and get back to learning, giving and helping.
